Essex Highway Sign

As you approach Essex on National Trails Highway the highway sign reads "population 100".  Even during its busiest period in the 1960s and 1970s the permanent population of Essex probably never exceeded 35 people.  The current population of Essex is less than 5 people.  The Pop. 100 figure was added by the highway department, based on the number of letter boxes in the post office.
